Tuberculosis Tests for Visa Applicants
If you are planning to stay in the UK for more than 6 months or are settling in the UK, you will need to undergo a tuberculosis (TB) test. This test is mandatory for visa applicants to ensure public health and safety. The tuberculosis test typically lasts for about 1 hour, during which you will undergo screening, and if you are deemed TB-free, you will be issued a valid TB-free certificate.
It’s crucial to include the TB test certificate with your UK visa application. Failure to do so may result in your application being refused.
In the event that an abnormality is detected during the TB test, you may be required to provide a sputum sample, which is extracted from your lungs. This sample will be sent for analysis, and depending on the results, you may be prescribed a 6-month course of medication. It’s essential to comply with these procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of both yourself and others in the UK
Tuberculosis Test Exemptions
You are exempt from needing a TB test if you fall into one of the following categories:
- You are a diplomat accredited to the UK.
- You are a returning UK resident who has not been away for more than 2 years.
- You have resided for at least 6 months in a country where TB screening is not required by the UK, and you have been away from that country for no more than 6 months.
For children under 11, a doctor will assess if a chest x-ray is necessary. Generally, children under 11 do not require a chest x-ray.
If your child needs a TB test, you must take them to an approved clinic and complete a health questionnaire. If the clinician determines that your child does not have TB, they will issue a certificate. It is essential to include this certificate with your child’s UK visa application, along with a copy. Upon arrival in the UK, ensure that you have the certificate in your hand luggage for inspection.
