If you are considering taking you Thai partner to visit the UK, with the intention to marry or form a civil partnership, then you will require a UK marriage visitors visa. This visa does not allow you to switch categories to say for example a spouse visa, this visa does allow partners to come and visit the UK as a tourist for a period of up to 6 months and enter into a marriage.
What are the requirements?
In order to qualify for a UK Marriage visitors Visa, the pair of you must be 18 years of age or older and be in a genuine relationship. You must be intending to stay in the UK for less than 6 months and have the means to leave the country at the end of your visit. Your Thai wife must have the financial backing either herself or via you, as a sponsor, to support herself in the UK. They will NOT be allowed to work or have recourse to public funds.
What documents are required?
Like all applications for UK Visas, your Thai wife or Thai Fiancée will need to provide certain documentation. It should go without saying that she will need a valid Thai passport or other travel identification. In addition, she will also need to prove that she can support herself financially, or you can assist her by providing the previous 6 months payslips or bank statements.
You will also be asked about your future plans so you will need to prove where you are going to live. You will be required to show proof of where she will stay and your future travel plans but we strongly advise not paying for these until the visa has been granted.
In order to assist with your application, we also suggest that you provide the following:
- Details of the marriage such as a marriage certificate and any evidence regarding who has made payments
- If you are planning to get married in the UK, proof of having booked a venue and evidence of communication between yourselves and the venue
- If either of you has been married before, that person will be required to show proof that they are free to marry. This could be a decree absolute or a death certificate of the previous husband or wife
All documentation must be accompanied by a certified translation if the documents are not already in English.
How to apply – for a marriage visitors visa?
